It is with great sadness that I write this letter about the Newtown, Conn. tragedy. We as a nation mourn this despicable act of a coward and a very sick individual.
That being said, I wish to address another matter that keeps coming up every time something like this happens, and that is gun control.
Every time a tragedy involving firearms happens in this country the “anti-gun nuts” come out of the woodwork.
I will never understand the logic of blaming an inanimate object like a gun. It is not the gun’s fault some lunatic with a gun in his hand wants to kill someone. Put the blame where is should be and that lies with the person committing these senseless acts and, in this case, on our most innocent.
This was a gun-free zone that this tragedy occurred in and had there been an armed security guard at the school, it would not have taken place. Yes, it is sad to say that it has come to that in America; but that is what is needed. I listened to Piers Morgan on CNN last night and he made me sick with his anti-gun rant. Let’s treat the problem, not the symptom.
The problem is there is moral decay in this country, in our schools. There is corruption in our courts and their support systems and no one is doing anything about it. I was raised in the 60s and 70s and it wasn’t like it is in today’s society.
The government wants to run our lives for us and the Bill of Rights and the Constitution are being trampled by the current and previous administrations. Our founding fathers would all roll over in there graves if they were to come back for one day and see how socialized this country has become.
Let’s take away their rights till there is nothing left. That seems to be our country’s agenda now. I hardly recognize this country that I love.
So let’s not take away the guns and create more gun laws. There are thousands of laws on the books now.
When only the cops have guns, it is called a police state. Have we forgotten history? Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin killed millions and millions of unarmed citizens. Our Second Amendment must not be tampered with if we are to be protected from governments with a different agenda.
As the great Thomas Jefferson quoted, “No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
Let’s put armed guards in our schools if that is what we as a society believes is the right thing to do to protect our children. I am all for protecting them. I am sure we can get enough volunteers in the communities to be trained at no expense to the school systems. I will certainly volunteer some of my time to protect our most valuable assets, our children.
